What any Schenectady fleet can copy.","The Postal Service runs more than two hundred thousand vehicles on a schedule that does not forgive a missed day. The habits that keep those vans moving scale down to any fleet with two trucks.","Fleet","Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center","2026-03-17T08:00:00-04:00",8,[56,77,78,79,80],"government-municipal-fleet-service","commercial-van-truck-service","fleet-repair","fleet",[82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99,100,101],"The United States Postal Service operates one of the largest civilian vehicle fleets in the world — more than two hundred thousand vehicles, many of them the boxy Grumman Long Life Vehicles built between 1987 and 1994 and still delivering mail in Schenectady, Scotia and Glenville today. Those LLVs were designed for a twenty-four-year life. Many are past thirty. They are joined on routes now by Metris and ProMaster vans, Transits, and the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle built by Oshkosh. The mix is different; the operating philosophy is not.","Fogg’s services postal vehicles as part of our fleet work, and our fleet accounts include the Postal Service and Oshkosh among local businesses, municipalities and contractors. We are not going to describe anyone’s internal procedures here. What we can describe is the shape of the practice as it shows up in our bays — and why a six-van HVAC company in Rotterdam or a landscaper in Clifton Park would be smart to copy it.","## Habit one: the vehicle is inspected before it leaves, every day","A postal carrier walks around the vehicle before the route. Lights, tires, mirrors, a look underneath for drips, a listen to the engine. It takes two minutes, and it is written down. Most private fleets skip this entirely, and the cost shows up as a tire run flat on the Thruway that was visibly low in the yard at 7 a.m.","What to copy: a one-page daily check on a clipboard or a phone, signed by the driver. Not a form for its own sake — a form that gets read. The first week will feel like overhead. By the second month it will have caught a brake light, a soft tire and a coolant drip, and nobody will argue about it again.","## Habit two: defects get a tag, not a mention","When a carrier notices a problem, it goes on a written repair tag that stays with the vehicle until the repair is done. “The brakes feel funny” said to a supervisor at the end of a shift is information that evaporates by Monday. A tag with a date and a description is a work order waiting to happen.","What to copy: give drivers a place to write defects that lands on the manager’s desk — a shared sheet, a text thread, a tag on the keys. When the vehicle comes to us, that list rides along. We would much rather read “pulls right since the pothole on Route 7 two weeks ago” than reverse-engineer it on the alignment rack.","## Habit three: maintenance runs on the calendar, not on the complaint","Postal vehicles come in for scheduled preventive maintenance on fixed intervals whether or not anything is wrong. The point is that a scheduled visit finds the problem that would otherwise become an unscheduled one. The brake pad at 3 millimeters gets replaced at the scheduled visit instead of becoming a grinding noise on a route.","What to copy: pick an interval per vehicle — mileage or months, whichever comes first — and let the shop track it. At Fogg’s, fleet accounts get per-vehicle intervals in our system and a call when a unit is due. The owner does not have to remember. For most Capital Region work vans that means an oil service and inspection every 5,000 miles, with the vehicle on a lift so a technician can look at the brake lines, the exhaust and the underbody that salt is working on.","## Habit four: downtime is scheduled, so it is small","Mail still has to move when a vehicle is in the shop, so maintenance is staged: vehicles come in on a rotation, not all at once, and never on the day the route cannot spare them. The result is that no single day loses more than the fleet can absorb.","What to copy: tell your shop what days and hours each vehicle can be spared. We stage multi-vehicle work around that — three vans on a Tuesday morning with early drop-off, two more on Thursday — and we batch New York State inspections the same way so a $21 sticker never costs a day of revenue. If something does break, fleet units get priority in the schedule, because a van off the road costs more than a car in a driveway.","## Habit five: every vehicle has a history, and somebody reads it","The Postal Service knows what each vehicle has cost. That is how a fleet decides when a thirty-year-old LLV has earned replacement and when it has another two years in it. Without the history, that decision is a guess made on the day of the biggest repair bill.","What to copy: one invoice a month, with every vehicle listed separately and the history behind each line. Our fleet billing does exactly that, including cost-per-unit tracking, so when unit 7 has had a starter, an alternator and a battery in fourteen months you can see the pattern — and we can tell you whether it is a parasitic draw we should chase or a vehicle that is telling you something.","## Why it works at any size","None of this requires a maintenance department. It requires a clipboard, a shop that keeps records and a willingness to fix things on Tuesday that could have been ignored until Friday. The Postal Service does it because a missed route is a visible, public failure. A plumbing company’s missed service call is just as expensive; it is simply less visible.","If you run two or more work vehicles anywhere in the Capital Region — Schenectady, Niskayuna, Saratoga Springs, Amsterdam, Albany — we will set this up with you. Twenty-seven bays on Route 50 in Scotia, Monday through Friday 7:30 to 6, with early drop-off. Call the fleet desk at (518) 348-7764 and ask for a fleet account consultation. It is free, it takes twenty minutes, and you leave with intervals written down for every vehicle you own.","como-el-servicio-postal-mantiene-sus-vans-en-ruta",1793321672958]
