Brine soaks into every seam and stays wet for weeks. Here is what it does to brake lines, frames and exhausts — and how to get ahead of it.","Seasonal","Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center","2026-03-03T08:00:00-05:00",7,[77,78,65,79,80],"brake-repair","spongy-brake-pedal","exhaust-repair","fluid-leaking-under-car",[82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99,100,101],"If you have owned cars in the Capital Region for twenty years, you have noticed that they rust differently now. Fenders and doors are better than they used to be — factories galvanize and coat them. But the brake lines, fuel lines, subframes, rocker panels and exhaust hangers on a ten-year-old vehicle look worse than they did a generation ago. The road did not change. What goes on it did.","## Rock salt versus brine","For decades highway departments spread rock salt. It melted ice, bounced off the road, and most of what hit the underside of a car was a dry crystal that washed away in the next rain. Starting in the 2000s, New York and its counties moved to liquid brine — salt dissolved in water, often blended with magnesium chloride or calcium chloride — sprayed on the pavement before a storm. It works better at lower temperatures and uses less salt per mile. It is also far more corrosive to steel, for three reasons.","First, it is already a liquid. It atomizes behind every tire and coats the underbody as a mist that reaches places rock salt never did: inside frame rails, between the brake line and its clip, under the fuel tank straps. Second, magnesium and calcium chlorides are hygroscopic — they pull moisture out of the air — so a brine-coated frame stays damp on a dry, sunny day in February. Third, the residue does not wash off with one rain. It sits in seams and keeps working.","The result is corrosion that starts out of sight. By the time it is visible on a rocker panel, the brake line next to it has been rusting for years.","## What it does to brake lines","Steel brake lines run the length of the vehicle along the frame, exactly where the spray lands. Brine gets under the plastic coating and the retaining clips, and the line pits from the outside in. It fails one of two ways. Slowly: a pinhole weeps fluid, the pedal gets gradually spongier, and the fluid reservoir drops. Suddenly: a pitted section lets go under a hard stop and the pedal goes to the floor. Either is a New York State inspection failure. The second is a crash.","We see brake line failures on Capital Region vehicles at eight to twelve years old and sometimes sooner on work vans that run every day on Route 5 and Route 7. Pickups that spent winters at a job site with slush in the frame rails are worst. Replacement runs from a couple hundred dollars for a section to considerably more when every line on the vehicle has reached the same age — which, being the same steel in the same brine, they usually have.","## What it does to everything else","- **Frames and subframes.** Brine collects inside box-section rails and rusts them from the inside. The NYS safety inspection fails frame corrosion that compromises structure. Some trucks and SUVs of the early 2000s are known for it; we check them every visit.","- **Fuel lines and tank straps.** Same steel, same spray. A weeping fuel line is a failure and a fire hazard.","- **Exhaust.** Hangers, flanges and the thin steel at the muffler fail first. An exhaust leak ahead of the cabin is a carbon monoxide risk in a vehicle that will have its windows closed for five months.","- **Parking brake cables and caliper slides.** They rust, seize, and quietly drag a brake until it overheats.","- **Rocker panels and cab corners.** The visible rust that costs resale value and, once through, fails inspection.","- **Electrical grounds and connectors.** Corroded grounds cause the intermittent electrical faults that are hardest to diagnose. A surprising number of check engine lights in this region trace back to a green connector under the vehicle.","## How to get ahead of it","Rinse the underbody after storms, especially the first few of the season when brine is heaviest. A touchless wash with an underbody spray is enough; the point is to get the chlorides off before they sit for a month. Avoid parking a wet, salted vehicle in a heated garage — warmth accelerates corrosion. If you keep vehicles past eight years, an annual oil-based undercoating applied in the fall slows the process significantly; it is common across the river in the Mohawk Valley for a reason.","Most important: have the lines, frame and exhaust looked at once a year with the vehicle on a lift. We do it during the oil service on every vehicle more than a few winters old, and we photograph what we find. A brake line that is surface-rusted is a “monitor.” A line that is pitted and scaling is a “soon.” A line that is weeping is a “now,” and we will tell you which is which with the picture to prove it.","## For fleets","Fleet vehicles see the worst of this because they run every weekday through every storm and they are kept longer. On fleet accounts we add an underbody inspection to each scheduled service from November to April and track line condition per unit, so a brake line replacement is a planned item on a slow week rather than a tow from Freemans Bridge Road. If you run vehicles in the Capital Region and you have not had the underside looked at since the last inspection, bring them in before the next one. Fogg’s is at 642 Saratoga Road in Scotia; the fleet desk is (518) 348-7764.","sal-salmuera-y-lineas-de-freno-oxido-capital-region",1793321673247]
