It is an October decision. Here is the checklist we run on Capital Region vans and trucks before the snow, in the order it pays off.","Seasonal","Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center","2026-10-06T08:00:00-04:00",8,[77,78,79,80,81,82],"commercial-van-truck-service","fleet-tires","battery-electrical","diesel-repair","car-wont-start","heater-blowing-cold",[84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99,100,101,102,103],"The Capital Region does not get lake-effect snow the way Buffalo and Syracuse do. What we get is worse for vehicles: heavy snow that melts, refreezes, melts again, and a highway department that answers with salt and liquid brine from November until April. Add mornings in the single digits, hills like Glenridge Road and the Northway grades, and work vehicles that idle for heat between stops, and you have the hardest operating environment a cargo van will ever see.","Every January our fleet desk takes the same calls: van will not start in the yard, truck has no heat and the windshield will not clear, brake pedal went soft on Route 50. Almost none of it is a surprise. It was all visible in October. This is the list we run on work trucks and vans before the first storm, in the order that pays off.","## 1. Load-test every battery","At 0°F a battery delivers about half the cranking power it has in July, while the cold, thick-oiled engine asks for more. A battery that is three winters old should be load-tested, not just voltage-checked — voltage looks fine on a battery that is about to quit. The test takes five minutes and we do it free. A failing battery replaced in October costs $95–$360 installed; the same battery discovered in January costs that plus a jump, a tow and a missed morning.","On fleets, test every unit in the same week and replace the marginal ones together. Batteries bought in a batch fail in a batch, and knowing that lets you plan instead of react.","## 2. Tires: tread depth, pressure and the winter question","An all-season tire below 4/32″ of tread has lost most of its snow and slush grip. Below 2/32″ it fails the New York State inspection. Measure every tire now; a van with 5/32″ in October will be at the limit by March. Check pressures monthly all winter — every ten-degree drop steals about a pound.","Should a work van run winter tires? In this region, if it runs early mornings on unplowed side streets, yes. A dedicated winter tire like a Blizzak stops a loaded van measurably shorter on packed snow than any all-season. Winter tires are not legally required in New York, and studded tires are legal from October 16 to April 30. For fleets, we stock the winter set and swap it on a scheduled visit so nobody is waiting on tires the week of the first storm.","## 3. Brake lines, fuel lines and the underbody","Brine is the enemy of steel. It wicks into every seam and stays wet long after the road dries. Steel brake lines rust from the outside in and fail in two ways: slowly, as a weep that drops the pedal, or suddenly, as a line that lets go under hard braking. Either one is an inspection failure and the second is a hazard. Have the lines looked at with the vehicle on a lift before winter, especially on vehicles eight years and older. Look at fuel lines, the exhaust and the frame while you are under there. A rinse of the underbody after a storm is cheap insurance.","## 4. Coolant, heat and the defroster","Coolant should test to at least −34°F. Weak heat in a work truck is not a comfort issue — if the heater cannot clear the windshield, the vehicle is unsafe to drive, and weak heat usually means low coolant, a stuck thermostat or a plugged heater core, all of which have engine-damaging versions. Test the heater output now, not on the first cold morning.","## 5. Diesel fuel and glow plugs","Power Stroke, Duramax, Cummins and Isuzu trucks have their own winter list. Untreated diesel gels in the single digits; run winterized fuel or an anti-gel additive from November on and keep tanks above half to limit condensation. Replace the fuel filter before winter, not after it clogs with wax. Have the glow plugs or intake heater checked — a truck that cranks and cranks at 10°F usually has a glow-plug circuit that was marginal in September. Block heaters are worth plugging in below 20°F.","## 6. Wipers, washer fluid and lights","Wiper blades older than a year will not survive their first ice-scraping. Use winter-rated washer fluid and keep a spare jug in the vehicle. Check every exterior bulb; short days mean the lights run twelve hours a day, and a burned-out brake light is a NYS inspection failure and a rear-end collision waiting for a slick road.","## 7. The small stuff that stops a route","Door locks and sliding-door tracks freeze; lubricate them now. Check the parking brake cable — they rust and seize over winter, which is why we tell delivery drivers not to use the parking brake on sub-zero nights unless they must. Inspect the exhaust for leaks before the windows stay closed for five months. Make sure every vehicle has a scraper, a shovel, a blanket and a working phone charger.","## Do it in October","All of this fits in one visit per vehicle, with the vehicle on a lift and a written report sorted into fix now, fix soon and fine. For fleet accounts we schedule it as a batch in October — three or four units a morning with early drop-off — so the whole fleet is winter-ready before Thanksgiving and the shop is not fighting a snowstorm for bay space. Call the fleet desk at (518) 348-7764, or book a single vehicle online. Fogg’s is at 642 Saratoga Road in Scotia, Monday through Friday 7:30 to 6, twenty-seven bays, and we would much rather see your trucks in October than tow them in January.","preparar-camiones-y-vans-de-trabajo-para-el-invierno-nueva-york",1793319012182]
