Why is my gas mileage suddenly worse?

The short answer

A sudden MPG drop usually has a mechanical cause: underinflated tires, a lazy oxygen sensor forcing a rich mixture, a dragging brake, old spark plugs, or a stuck thermostat keeping the engine cold. Winter alone cuts fuel economy 10–20% in upstate New York — but a drop that persists into spring is a real signal.

Likely causes, ranked

  1. 01

    Aging oxygen sensors

    most common

O2 sensors degrade gradually, skewing the fuel mixture rich for years before ever setting a code. The classic cause of the slow MPG bleed on higher-mileage cars — and it shortens converter life too.

  2. 02

    Underinflated tires

    common

A few PSI down across four tires adds measurable rolling resistance. Free to check, free to fix, and responsible for more “my car got thirsty” complaints than anything else.

  3. 03

    Dragging brake caliper

    common

Driving with one brake lightly applied burns fuel constantly — often paired with a faint pull or one hot wheel. Common after salt seasons.

  4. 04

    Stuck-open thermostat or worn plugs

    common

An engine that never fully warms runs rich indefinitely; tired plugs burn fuel incompletely. Both are routine maintenance items with outsized MPG effects.

What to do right now

  1. 1

Check tire pressures against the door placard — the two-minute free fix comes first.

  2. 2

Rule out season and use: winter blends, cold starts, idling to warm up, and roof cargo all tax MPG legitimately.

  3. 3

If the drop persists, book a look: fuel-trim data reveals rich-running instantly, and a lift check catches the dragging brake.

What it typically costs

Often the fix is air in the tires or a $150–$450 plugs-and-sensors visit that pays for itself in fuel within months. Fuel-trim diagnosis at Fogg’s is part of the standard $89–$149 diagnostic, applied to any repair. A lazy O2 sensor eventually sets a code, and a lit check engine light fails the NYS inspection — so catch it on your schedule, not the sticker’s. For fleet accounts, cost-per-unit fuel creep is one of the earliest signals we track.

Our diagnosis fee goes toward the repair.

How much does winter really affect gas mileage?

In the Capital Region, expect 10–20% worse: winter fuel blends carry less energy, cold engines run rich longer, dense air adds drag, and idling to defrost burns fuel at 0 MPG. If your economy recovers by May, that was winter.

If not, something mechanical is billing you.

Can a dirty air filter really hurt MPG?

On modern fuel-injected cars, less than folklore says — the computer compensates for mild restriction. A severely clogged filter hurts power more than economy. It’s a cheap maintenance item regardless, just not the usual MPG villain.
