New York State Inspection

Annual NYS safety and OBD-II emissions inspection at the state-regulated $21 fee — usually while you wait, batched by appointment for fleets.

New York State Inspection at Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY

Quick answer

A New York State inspection at Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY, minutes from Schenectady, costs the state-regulated $21 for most passenger vehicles — $10 safety plus $11 OBD-II emissions — and takes about 30 minutes. A lit check engine light fails the emissions portion. Fail here, and re-inspection within 30 days carries no additional inspection fee.

What’s included

  • Full NYS safety inspection — brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights, glass, belts, fuel, exhaust, frame
  • OBD-II emissions test (1996+ gas vehicles under 8,501 lbs) with readiness-monitor check
  • Low-enhanced visual emissions inspection for older or heavier gas vehicles
  • Electronic NYS inspection sticker with QR code, printed on the spot
  • Measured, photographed quote on any failed item at published prices
  • Re-inspection within 30 days at the same station — no additional inspection fee
  • Fleet accounts: expiration tracking, monthly batching, and results logged per vehicle

Signs you need this

  • Inspection sticker expires this month or has already lapsed
  • You just registered a vehicle in New York — 10 days to inspect
  • Check engine light is on, or codes were recently cleared
  • Brake, exhaust, or steering noises you’ve been putting off
  • A crack in the windshield within the wiper sweep
  • Tires worn near 2/32″ after a Capital Region winter
  • Fleet units with expirations scattered across the calendar

The full guide

Every vehicle registered in New York has to pass a safety and emissions inspection once every 12 months at a DMV-licensed station, and the sticker expires at the end of the month printed on it.

Newly registered vehicles — a car you just bought from a private seller, a van you just brought in from out of state — must be inspected within 10 days of registration.

Fogg’s is a New York State licensed inspection station on Route 50 in Scotia, and with 27 bays an inspection rarely means a long wait.

The safety portion is a hands-on check of the equipment that keeps you on the road: brakes including the parking brake, steering linkage and front end, suspension, tires (anything at 2/32″ or less fails), wheel fasteners, headlights, brake lights, turn signals and other lamps, horn, mirrors, wiper blades and washers, the windshield and other glass, seat belts, the fuel system for leaks, the exhaust system for leaks and missing components, and the chassis and frame for rust perforation.

The emissions portion for 1996-and-newer gas vehicles under 8,501 lbs is the OBD-II test: the inspector plugs into your vehicle’s computer and checks that the check engine light is off, that no emissions codes are stored, and that the readiness monitors have completed.

A battery disconnect or a recently cleared code leaves monitors “not ready,” which is a failure even with no light on — drive 50–100 miles of mixed city and highway first.

Older vehicles and gas vehicles over 8,500 lbs get a visual low-enhanced emissions check instead; Schenectady County is not in the downstate diesel emissions program, so diesels here get the safety inspection only.

What fails most often in the Capital Region is what salt and brine do over a winter: rust-perforated brake lines, rotted-out exhaust pipes and flex sections, tie rods and ball joints with play, frame rust on older pickups, windshields cracked by Route 7 gravel through the wiper sweep, and tires worn to 2/32″ after a season of Glenridge Road hills.

If your vehicle fails, nothing is repaired without your approval — you get a measured quote at our published prices, and you’re free to take it elsewhere.

Under NYS DMV rules a vehicle that fails may be re-inspected at the same station within 30 days with no additional inspection fee; only the repairs themselves are billed.

For fleets, the inspection is a scheduling problem more than a mechanical one.

We track every unit’s sticker expiration on the account, batch inspections by month so vans and trucks come through in staged groups rather than one emergency at a time, fold any repairs into the same visit, and put the completed inspection in the vehicle’s service record alongside the PM history.

New York’s current stickers are printed on demand with a QR code, so there is no waiting on a sticker book — the vehicle leaves legal.

For fleet accounts

We track sticker expiration dates for every unit on a fleet account and batch inspections by month, staging groups of vans or trucks through our 27 bays so routes keep running. Repairs needed to pass are folded into the same visit and the inspection result is logged to the vehicle’s record.

Common questions

How much is a NYS inspection in Schenectady County?

The state sets it: $21 for most passenger cars, SUVs, and light trucks — $10 for the safety inspection and $11 for the OBD-II emissions test. That is the maximum any station in Schenectady County may charge for a standard inspection.

Fees differ for heavier vehicles, motorcycles, and trailers, and the inspection fee does not include any repairs needed to pass.

Will my car fail the NYS inspection if the check engine light is on?

Yes. For 1996-and-newer gas vehicles under 8,501 lbs, a lit check engine light is an automatic emissions failure, and so are readiness monitors that show “not ready” after a battery disconnect or a recent code clear.

Fix the cause first — our diagnostic fee is $89–$149 and credits toward the repair — then drive 50–100 miles of mixed driving so the monitors complete, then inspect. We can handle the whole sequence in one account.

What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?

You get a written list of exactly what failed, a measured quote at our published prices, and a choice. Nothing is repaired without your approval.

Under New York State rules you have 30 days to make the repairs and return to the same station for a re-inspection with no additional inspection fee.

Driving with an expired sticker past that window risks a ticket, so most people fix the failed items the same day.

Can you inspect my whole fleet at once?

Better than that — we spread it out so your routes never stop.

Fleet accounts get every unit’s expiration date tracked, inspections batched by month, and vehicles staged through the bays in groups: early drop-off, inspected and repaired the same day, out before the next shift.

With 27 bays and the fleet desk at (518) 348-7764, a dozen vans in a day is routine.
