Car, Truck & Fleet Batteries
Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY, minutes from Schenectady, stocks and installs Interstate car, truck and AGM batteries for $95–$360 installed, including a free load test, terminal service, registration to the vehicle’s charging system where required, and recycling of the old battery. Most replacements take 30–45 minutes. A battery that tests weak in October rarely survives January.

The straight story
A battery dies on the first single-digit morning, not the week before, and in the Capital Region that morning arrives in December and repeats until March.
Cold cuts a battery’s available cranking power roughly in half at 0°F while a cold engine needs more of it, which is why a battery that started the car fine through November leaves a driver stranded in a Niskayuna driveway on the first real freeze.
We test batteries free with every service, print the result in cold-cranking amps against the vehicle’s spec, and tell you plainly whether it will see the winter through.
Replacing a battery by age and test result — before it fails — is one of the cheapest reliability decisions a driver or a fleet manager can make.

We stock and install Interstate batteries in the two constructions modern vehicles use. The conventional flooded battery is the right, lower-cost choice for most cars and light trucks built without start-stop systems.
The AGM battery — absorbed glass mat — is required on vehicles with start-stop, heavy electrical loads or an AGM battery from the factory, and it is the one we recommend on diesel trucks, accessory-heavy work vans and anything that idles long hours with the heater and equipment running.
Fitting a flooded battery where the vehicle calls for AGM shortens its life to a year or two; we match the group size, cold-cranking amps and construction to the door-jamb and under-hood specs every time.
Installation is more than dropping the battery in.
Most vehicles built in the last decade have a battery-management system that has to be told a new battery is installed — without registration the charging system treats the new battery like the old, tired one and overcharges it, and some vehicles throw a check-engine light, which is an automatic New York State inspection failure while lit.
We register the battery with a factory-level scan tool on makes that require it, clean and protect the terminals, verify the alternator’s charging output so a weak alternator does not kill the new battery in a month, and recycle the old one.
For fleets, batteries are tested at every preventive-maintenance visit and replaced by age before the first hard freeze, because a dead van at 6 AM costs a route, not a jump.

Good to know
Common questions about batteries
How do I know if my battery will make it through the winter?
Have it load-tested — free with any service here — and look at two numbers: the measured cold-cranking amps against the vehicle’s spec, and the battery’s age.
A battery at or past four years, or testing under about 70% of its rated CCA in October, rarely survives the first run of single-digit mornings in January. Replace it by choice in the fall, not by tow truck in winter.
Do I need an AGM battery or a regular one?
If your vehicle has a start-stop system, came from the factory with an AGM battery, or is a diesel truck or work van with heavy electrical loads, you need an AGM. Fitting a conventional flooded battery there shortens its life to a year or two.
If your vehicle has no start-stop and came with a flooded battery, a quality flooded battery is the right, lower-cost choice.
Why does a new battery have to be “registered” to the car?
Most vehicles built in the last decade have a battery-management system that adjusts charging as the battery ages.
If it is not told a new battery is installed, it keeps charging as if the old, tired one were still there, overcharges the new one and shortens its life — and some vehicles set a check-engine light, which fails the New York State inspection while lit.
We register it with a factory-level scan tool.
How much does a car battery cost installed in Schenectady?
At Fogg’s, $95–$360 installed: conventional flooded batteries typically $95–$220, AGM batteries for start-stop, diesel and work vans $220–$360.
That includes the test, registration where the vehicle requires it, terminal service and recycling the old battery, and it is quoted exactly for your vehicle before we start.
