Brake Repair & Replacement

Pads, rotors, calipers, brake lines, and fluid — measured in millimeters, photographed, and quoted before any work begins.

Brake Repair & Replacement at Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY

Quick answer

Brake service at Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY — minutes from Schenectady — is priced per axle: pads only start at $189, and pads plus rotors typically run $289–$429. Either takes 1–2 hours and includes a measured inspection with photos. Grinding means metal on metal: stop driving and call (518) 348-7764.

  • Rotor replacement or machining based on measurement
  • Caliper service, slide-pin lubrication, and new hardware
  • Brake line and hose inspection for salt corrosion
  • Brake fluid test and exchange when due
  • Road test and 24-month / 24,000-mile parts-and-labor warranty

The full guide

Brakes are the one system where “it can wait” has a body count, and also the one system shops most love to oversell. We fix both problems the same way: measurement.

Your pads and rotors get measured in millimeters and photographed, and you see exactly what we see before anyone quotes anything. If you have 60% pad life left, we tell you to come back next year.

When brakes do need work, we do it right: quality pads matched to how the vehicle is actually driven — a Niskayuna commuter and a cargo van running stop-and-go down State Street do not want the same friction material — rotors machined or replaced based on measured thickness, calipers serviced so new pads wear evenly, and hardware replaced instead of reused.

Every brake job ends with a road test and is backed by our 24-month / 24,000-mile parts-and-labor warranty.

We handle complete brake systems on all makes: pads, rotors, drums, calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinders, brake lines, ABS diagnosis, and brake fluid exchanges.

The salt and brine New York spreads on Route 50 and I-890 every winter is brutal on steel brake lines, and a rust-perforated line is a New York State inspection failure as well as a safety problem.

We inspect lines at every service, because a line that lets go is not a warning-sign kind of failure.

For fleet accounts

Fleet brakes are measured and logged per unit at every PM visit, so pads get replaced on the scheduled visit before they hit metal — not after a driver calls in from a route. Several vans can be staged across our 27 bays the same morning and billed on one monthly invoice.

Common questions

How do I know if my brakes are bad?

Squealing means the wear indicators are touching — you have some time, but book soon. Grinding means pads are gone and you’re damaging rotors with every stop. Pedal pulsing points to warped rotors.

Any of these is worth a free measured inspection with photos.

How long do brake pads last?

Typically 30,000–60,000 miles, but stop-and-go driving through Schenectady, the climbs on Glenridge Road and the Rotterdam hills, towing, and winter conditions all shorten that. Front pads wear faster than rears.

We record measurements at every visit so you can plan the expense instead of being surprised by it.

Do I really need new rotors with my pads?

Not always — and we prove it with a micrometer. If your rotors measure above the minimum-thickness spec and aren’t warped or scored, we can machine or reuse them. If they’re below spec, machining is unsafe and we’ll show you the numbers.

Will worn brakes fail a New York State inspection?

Yes. The NYS safety inspection checks pad and lining thickness, rotor and drum condition, the parking brake, and the hydraulic system. Pads below the state minimum, a seized caliper, or a leaking or rust-perforated brake line are automatic failures.

We’re a licensed NYS inspection station, so we can measure, repair, and inspect in one visit.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

No. Grinding means the friction material is gone and steel is contacting your rotors — stopping distances grow, heat builds fast, and a caliper can seize. Call us at (518) 348-7764; same-day brake service is usually available in one of our 27 bays.
