Wiper Blades

Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY, minutes from Schenectady, stocks and installs Bosch, Trico and Michelin wiper blades — beam blades for most vehicles and winter blades for the salt-slush season — for about $18–$45 per blade installed, fitted to your vehicle while you wait. Torn or streaking wipers are a New York State inspection failure item.

In plain English

The straight story

Wiper blades are the least expensive safety part on a vehicle and the one most often ignored until a sleet storm on the Thruway makes the windshield unreadable.

In the Capital Region, blades live a hard life: road brine coats them all winter, ice tears the rubber when a frozen blade is switched on, and a summer of UV on a Route 50 parking lot hardens what the winter left.

The sign is streaking, chattering, or a band the blade skips — and if you notice it on the Western Gateway Bridge in a November downpour, it has already been there for weeks.

We check blades at every service and replace them in minutes, with the correct length and connector for your vehicle.

Wiper Blades

We stock and install two kinds.

Beam blades — Bosch ICON, Trico Flex, Michelin Stealth — have no exposed frame to ice up, press evenly along a curved windshield and are the right replacement for most vehicles built in the last fifteen years; they are also what most of those vehicles left the factory with.

Winter blades wrap the frame in a rubber boot so slush and ice cannot pack the hinges, and for a driver who parks outside and scrapes the windshield before dawn they are worth the swap from November to April.

Rear blades, which drivers forget until backing up in a snowstorm, are replaced at the same time. Washer fluid is topped off with a winter-rated blend that will not freeze in the lines at the temperatures a Schenectady January produces.

New York’s annual safety inspection checks the windshield wipers and washers, and a torn, missing or ineffective blade fails the vehicle — a cheap reason to fail a $21 inspection, and one we catch before the sticker is due.

For fleets, wiper blades are replaced on a schedule, typically every fall at the preventive-maintenance visit before the salt season, because a driver with a smeared windshield at 6 AM on an unlit road in Glenville is a liability no fleet manager wants, and a blade is a two-dollar line item against it.

One standardized blade spec per vehicle class, installed during the PM, billed on the monthly invoice.

Good to know

Common questions about wiper blades

How often should wiper blades be replaced in upstate New York?

About once a year, and the fall is the right time — new blades go on before the brine season, when they matter most. Blades that chatter, streak or leave a band are done regardless of age.

Drivers who park outside and scrape ice off the windshield often need a winter blade for the season and a beam blade for the rest of the year.

Will bad wiper blades fail my NYS inspection?

Yes. The New York State safety inspection checks that the wipers and washers work and that the blades clear the windshield; a torn, missing or ineffective blade is a failure item.

It is a cheap reason to fail a $21 inspection, and we check blades before every inspection we perform so it never comes to that.

What is the difference between a beam blade and a regular blade?

A conventional blade has an exposed metal frame with hinges that pack with ice and snow; a beam blade has no frame, presses evenly along a curved windshield, and cannot ice up the same way.

Most vehicles built in the last fifteen years came with beam blades and should be replaced with them. Winter blades are conventional blades with a rubber boot over the frame for the same reason.

Do you charge labor to install wiper blades?

No — installation is included in the blade price, and it takes a few minutes while you wait or during any other service.

We fit the correct length and connector for your vehicle, check the wiper arms, and top off the washer fluid with a winter-rated blend.
