Headlight, Tail & Signal Bulbs

Fogg’s Automotive Fleet & Service Center in Scotia, NY, minutes from Schenectady, stocks and installs Sylvania and Philips headlight, brake, tail, signal and license-plate bulbs for about $15–$45 per bulb installed on most vehicles, with sealed LED and HID assemblies quoted per vehicle. Every required lamp must work to pass the New York State inspection, and a burned-out bulb is the single most common reason a vehicle fails.

In plain English

The straight story

A burned-out bulb is the most common reason a vehicle fails the New York State safety inspection, and the cheapest.

The inspection checks every required lamp — headlights on both beams, tail lights, brake lights including the center high-mount, turn signals front and rear, the license-plate lamp, and hazard flashers — and one dead bulb fails the sticker.

We check every lamp at every service and before every inspection we perform, and most bulbs are replaced in minutes with the vehicle still in the bay.

On the roads here it is a safety issue first: a single working headlight on an unlit stretch of Route 147 in Glenville at 5 PM in December is half the light the engineers intended, and a dead brake light on I-890 is a rear-end collision waiting for a tailgater.

Headlight, Tail & Signal Bulbs

We stock and install Sylvania and Philips bulbs — the two brands that supply most factory lamps — in the halogen headlight, brake, tail, signal and interior sizes the Capital Region’s vehicles use.

For headlights we quote the standard replacement and, where it makes sense, the brighter long-life or upgraded halogen in the same DOT-compliant size; on most vehicles replacing both headlight bulbs at once is the right call, since the second usually follows the first by weeks and a matched pair keeps the beam color even.

Vehicles with factory HID or sealed LED headlamps are quoted per vehicle, because those assemblies are replaced as a unit and some require coding to the body module.

One honest note on LED upgrades: an LED replacement bulb dropped into a housing designed for halogen is generally not DOT-compliant, scatters glare into oncoming traffic, and can be a reason to fail the inspection.

We install OE-type halogen bulbs or complete DOT-compliant LED assemblies, not retrofit bulbs, and we aim headlights after replacing an assembly. We also restore hazed, yellowed headlight lenses, which cut light output dramatically and are themselves an inspection failure when badly clouded.

For fleets, every lamp is checked at every preventive-maintenance visit and bulbs are replaced on the spot — a van with a dead brake light is a liability on every route until it is fixed — with one standardized bulb spec per vehicle class and bulbs billed on the monthly invoice.

Good to know

Common questions about bulbs & lighting

Will one burned-out bulb fail my NYS inspection?

Yes. The New York State safety inspection requires every lamp to work — headlights on both beams, tail, brake and center brake lights, turn signals, license-plate lamp and hazards. One dead bulb fails the sticker.

It is the most common reason vehicles fail, and the cheapest; we check every lamp before every inspection we perform.

Can I put LED bulbs in my halogen headlights?

We do not recommend it and will not install retrofit LED bulbs in halogen housings. They are generally not DOT-compliant, scatter glare into oncoming traffic because the housing was designed for a halogen filament, and can be an inspection failure.

If you want LED headlights, we quote a complete DOT-compliant LED assembly for your vehicle and aim it after installation.

Should I replace both headlight bulbs when one burns out?

On most vehicles, yes. Halogen bulbs age at the same rate, so the second usually fails within weeks of the first, and a matched pair keeps the beam color and brightness even. Replacing both at once also saves a second trip.

On vehicles where the bulb is behind the bumper or wheel liner, doing both at once saves real labor.

How much does a headlight bulb cost installed?

Most halogen headlight, brake, tail and signal bulbs run $15–$45 per bulb installed at Fogg’s, while you wait. Bulbs that require removing the bumper or wheel liner take longer and are quoted.

Sealed LED and HID assemblies are quoted per vehicle, since they are replaced as a unit and some need coding to the vehicle.
