In plain English
The straight story
A commercial van tire is built for a vehicle that is always loaded, always stopping, and often turning a curb at a job site at the end of a route.
The C-metric and LT sizes on a Transit, ProMaster, Express or Sprinter carry reinforced sidewalls, higher load indexes and tread compounds designed for the drive-axle wear a loaded van produces.
Fitting a passenger tire in the same size to save money is a false economy and, on a van near its gross weight, a safety problem: the sidewall is not rated for the load, and the heat build-up on a summer run down the Thruway is how commercial tires fail.

The commercial lines we install most are the ones that have proven themselves across the Capital Region’s delivery, trades and home-care routes: Michelin Agilis CrossClimate, severe-snow rated and the default on Transit and ProMaster fleets that cannot take a snow day; Continental VanContact A/S and A/S Ultra; Hankook Vantra LT as the value standard; Firestone Transforce HT2 and AT2 and Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse on Super Duty and HD pickups; and 19.5-inch Bridgestone Duravis and Continental commercial sizes on E-450, F-450 and Isuzu NPR cutaways.
For postal and last-mile vehicles that spend all day in stop-and-go — the LLV, the Metris, the Transit — we spec for drive-axle wear and curb durability over highway quiet.
For a fleet account, tires stop being an emergency and become a line item.
We log tread depth in 32nds on every corner at every preventive-maintenance visit, set pull points per account — 4/32″ for vans that work through winter, 2/32″ as the legal floor the New York State inspection enforces — and group replacements into scheduled visits so a van is never sidelined on a route for a tire the record showed was coming.
One standardized spec per vehicle class means identical units carry identical tires, spares are simple, and the monthly invoice shows a tire cost per mile by unit.
Rotations are bundled into PM visits because a loaded van’s drive axle wears tires at a very different rate than the front; alignment is checked on the Hunter rack at every tire replacement and after any curb or pothole incident a driver reports.
Flats and road hazards on fleet units are received the same day. An owner-operator with a single van gets the same tracking and the same per-tire quote; the program is the method, not a minimum order.

Good to know
Common questions about commercial van tires
Can I use regular passenger tires on my cargo van?
Not safely once the van is loaded. Commercial C-metric and LT tires carry higher load indexes and reinforced sidewalls for a vehicle that runs near its gross weight all day.
A passenger tire in the same size is not rated for that load and builds heat under it. We quote the correct commercial size and load range from the door-jamb sticker.
What tires do you put on Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster fleets?
Most of our Transit and ProMaster fleets run Michelin Agilis CrossClimate — severe-snow rated so there is no seasonal changeover, load-rated for a full van, and tough on curbs. Continental VanContact and Hankook Vantra LT are the alternatives at other price tiers.
Whichever spec an account chooses, every identical unit on the account gets the same tire.
How do you keep a fleet from losing a van to a flat on a route?
By measuring. Tread depth goes on record at every PM visit, each account sets a pull point — usually 4/32″ for vans that work through winter — and replacements get grouped into the next scheduled visit before a tire reaches it.
Flats and road hazards on fleet units are received the same day, and a standardized spec means the right tire is on hand.
Do you handle 19.5-inch tires on cutaway and box trucks?
Yes — 225/70R19.5 and the related commercial sizes on E-450, F-450, Express 4500 and Isuzu NPR cutaways, within our lift limits of about 19,500 lbs GVWR.
Mounting and balancing on 19.5s is quoted per tire; we torque to the chassis spec and check alignment on the Hunter rack after installation.
