Why is my oil light on?

The short answer

A red oil-pressure light means the engine may be losing lubrication right now — pull over safely and shut it off. Check the dipstick: if oil is low, topping off may get you to a shop; if the level is fine, do not keep driving on a lit oil light. Minutes of oil starvation can destroy an engine.

Likely causes, ranked

  1. 01

    Oil level critically low

    most common

Leaks or gradual consumption finally dropped the level below what the pump can pick up. The most common and most fixable cause — if you stop before damage is done.

  2. 02

    Failing oil-pressure sensor

    common

Sensors do fail, and a false alarm is common enough to hope for — but never to assume. The dipstick and a pressure test tell the truth; guessing wrong costs an engine.

  3. 03

    Oil pump or pickup problems

    less common

A worn pump or sludged pickup screen can’t maintain pressure even with a full sump — often appearing first as flicker at hot idle. Serious, and worth catching at the flicker stage.

What to do right now

  1. 1

Pull over safely and shut the engine off — this light outranks your schedule, and it outranks the route.

  2. 2

Check the dipstick. Low: add oil and drive gently, straight to a shop. Full: don’t restart it — call for a tow.

  3. 3

Never “drive it and see.” Rod bearings die in minutes without pressure, and there’s no affordable version of that repair. Fleet drivers: this is a stop-the-unit call, not a finish-the-shift one.

What it typically costs

Best case: an oil top-off and a leak diagnosis. A failed sensor is typically $150–$300. What we’re protecting against is the alternative — bearing damage from oil starvation typically totals the engine. This is the cheapest tow you’ll ever be glad you paid for.

Our diagnosis fee goes toward the repair.

Related questions

Is the oil light the same as the oil-change reminder?

No — and confusing them is dangerous. The maintenance reminder (usually amber text like “Oil Change Due”) is a calendar. The red oil-can icon is a pressure alarm meaning lubrication may be failing right now.

The first is an errand; the second is an emergency.

The oil light flickers at stoplights but goes off when I drive. Is that okay?

That’s low pressure at hot idle — classically a worn pump, worn bearings, or oil thinned past its service life. It’s the early, affordable warning of a problem that will not stay small. Book a pressure test this week.
