Pads-only jobs start around $189/axle; pads plus rotors typically $289–$429/axle depending on vehicle. Calipers, lines, and ABS repairs quoted after inspection — always before work begins.

1–2 hours for a standard pad-and-rotor job; usually same-day for everything else, including brake lines.

Clifton Park’s brakes take Northway heat and Route 146 stop-and-go.

The exit 8 and 9 merges, the Crescent Rd and Grooms Rd light cycles, the Route 9 strip past Clifton Park Center — a daily commute to Albany is dozens of hard stops from highway speed, and a warped rotor shows up as the steering shimmy under braking at exit 9.

Winter adds brine from the Northway and the town roads, which seizes caliper pins, rusts hardware and eats the steel brake lines that the NYS safety inspection checks.

A Fogg’s brake visit measures everything first — pad thickness in millimeters, rotor thickness against spec, lines, hoses and slide pins — and photographs what we recommend. Pads start at $189 an axle; pads and rotors are $289–$429 on most cars and SUVs.

If the fronts are done and the rears have 6 mm left, that is what we tell you.

The drive from Clifton Park is 20 minutes down Route 146 and Glenridge Rd, against the commute both ways; drop off at 7:30 AM and nearly every brake job is done by evening. Service-van fleets have brake wear logged at each preventive visit.

Getting here from Clifton Park

Route 146 west through Rexford, and where Route 146 turns south for the Rexford Bridge, continue straight onto Glenridge Rd — follow it west about five miles to Route 50, then south a mile to the Fogg’s Automotive campus.

From the Exit 9 retail strip, Route 146 west is the whole trip; from Exit 8 and the Vischer Ferry side, Grooms Rd or Riverview Rd west to Route 146 works too. About 20 minutes, no Northway, no Schenectady traffic.

Questions

My steering wheel shakes when I brake coming off the Northway at exit 9 — pads or rotors?

That shimmy is almost always rotor runout — a rotor worn unevenly or heat-warped from repeated highway stops — so it is a pads-and-rotors job ($289–$429 an axle) rather than pads alone.

We measure the runout and thickness to confirm before you approve anything, and check the hardware so the new rotors do not do the same thing.

How do I know if my brakes are bad?

Squealing means the wear indicators are touching — you have some time, but book soon. Grinding means pads are gone and you’re damaging rotors with every stop. Pedal pulsing points to warped rotors.

Any of these is worth a free measured inspection with photos.

How long do brake pads last?

Typically 30,000–60,000 miles, but stop-and-go driving through Schenectady, the climbs on Glenridge Road and the Rotterdam hills, towing, and winter conditions all shorten that. Front pads wear faster than rears.

We record measurements at every visit so you can plan the expense instead of being surprised by it.

Do I really need new rotors with my pads?

Not always — and we prove it with a micrometer. If your rotors measure above the minimum-thickness spec and aren’t warped or scored, we can machine or reuse them. If they’re below spec, machining is unsafe and we’ll show you the numbers.

Will worn brakes fail a New York State inspection?

Yes. The NYS safety inspection checks pad and lining thickness, rotor and drum condition, the parking brake, and the hydraulic system. Pads below the state minimum, a seized caliper, or a leaking or rust-perforated brake line are automatic failures.

We’re a licensed NYS inspection station, so we can measure, repair, and inspect in one visit.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

No. Grinding means the friction material is gone and steel is contacting your rotors — stopping distances grow, heat builds fast, and a caliper can seize. Call us at (518) 348-7764; same-day brake service is usually available in one of our 27 bays.
