Custom quote

Quoted per vehicle class — a straight truck, a cutaway, and a pickup-and-trailer combination take different time on the lift. Repairs needed to pass are quoted separately at our published ranges and approved before any work. Fleet accounts schedule DOT inspections alongside NYS inspections and PM visits and see them on the monthly invoice.

Inspection itself typically one to two hours; scheduled with the unit’s PM or NYS inspection so one visit covers all three.

Albany’s commercial carriers — Port of Albany haulers, downtown distributors, construction outfits with medium-duty dumps, non-profits running passenger cutaways — carry federal paper on top of New York’s.

A commercial vehicle over 10,000 lbs GVWR operating in interstate commerce needs an annual inspection under 49 CFR 396.17 — brakes, steering, suspension, frame, coupling devices, tires and wheels, lighting, exhaust, windshield and wipers, emergency equipment — with the report kept on file and proof carried on the vehicle.

Missing or expired, it is a roadside out-of-service and a mark on your carrier profile.

At Fogg’s we batch DOT annual inspections into the fleet’s preventive visits so a truck is inspected, serviced and re-stickered in one trip rather than three.

Findings come as measurements — brake lining thickness and adjustment, tire depth, frame and crossmember condition — with the items that would fail roadside fixed in the same bay.

Inspection reports and certificates are kept per vehicle alongside the NYS inspection and service history, ready for a DOT audit or a roadside request. Billing goes to the account, purchase order or FMC. Pricing is quoted per account.

Questions

Do my Albany box trucks need a DOT inspection on top of the NYS inspection?

If they are over 10,000 lbs GVWR and run in interstate commerce under a USDOT number, yes — the federal annual inspection is separate from the NYS inspection, and the report has to be on file with proof on the truck.

We do both in one visit, batched into your preventive schedule, and keep the paperwork per vehicle. Not sure which rules cover your trucks? Call (518) 348-7764 and we walk through it.

Does my 12,000 lb box truck need a DOT inspection if I only drive in New York?

Almost certainly yes.

The federal annual inspection rule in 49 CFR 396.17 applies to commercial motor vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR in interstate commerce, and New York adopts the federal safety regulations for most intrastate commercial motor vehicles, so a truck that never leaves Schenectady County is generally still covered.

Exemptions are narrow — bring the registration and we’ll tell you plainly.

Is a DOT inspection the same as a New York State inspection?

No. The NYS inspection is a DMV registration requirement for every New York vehicle, with a 12-month sticker and an emissions test on lighter vehicles.

The DOT annual inspection is a federal FMCSA requirement for commercial motor vehicles in commerce, with its own checklist and a 14-month record. Many trucks need both — ask us which applies to yours.

How long do I have to keep the DOT inspection report?

Fourteen months from the inspection date, under 49 CFR 396.21, at your principal place of business or wherever the vehicle is housed. Proof must also be on the vehicle — the report or a decal.

We apply the decal, send a copy to your office, and keep the inspection on the unit’s record.

What happens if a vehicle fails the DOT inspection?

The report lists every defect, and the vehicle does not get the decal until each one is corrected. We quote the repairs at our published prices, do them on the same visit when parts allow, and re-check them.

A truck with a brake, steering, or tire defect that would be an out-of-service condition at roadside should not leave until it is fixed — and we will say so.
