Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspectionin Saratoga Springs, NY
Buying a used vehicle? Our pre-purchase inspection finds hidden mechanical, safety, rust, and inspection-sticker problems before you buy.
Saratoga County
Why Saratoga Springs drives for it
Pre-purchase inspection for Saratoga Springs buyers at Fogg’s in Scotia, 25 minutes down Route 50: $129 for a lift inspection of frame and brake-line rust, fluids, brakes, tires, suspension and stored codes, photographed and written up. Used horse-farm trucks and summer-rental castoffs get the same scrutiny.
Saratoga Springs has a lively used market with its own quirks: the farm and track trucks that have towed hard and been parked in wet fields, the ex-rental and ex-fleet vehicles that cycle out after the summer season, the Skidmore student car being sold in May.
Each hides something different — a frame rusted by manure and brine, a transmission overheated behind a horse trailer, a rental with every service interval skipped — and none of it shows on the test drive down Broadway.
Our pre-purchase inspection is $129 and takes about 90 minutes.
We put the vehicle on a lift and photograph the frame, floor pans, brake and fuel lines, exhaust, suspension and tires; check fluid condition, which tells us about the transmission and cooling system; scan for stored and pending codes and emissions-monitor readiness; and test the battery and charging system.
You get a written report sorted into walk-away, negotiate and fine, with the photos to back it up. Have the seller meet you here, or drop the car for the afternoon.

See all FAQs01I am buying a used truck from a Saratoga horse farm — what should Fogg’s look at hardest?
The frame, the transmission and the brakes. Farm trucks live in wet manure and brine, so we photograph the frame and lines for rot; towing overheats transmissions, so we check fluid condition and scan for stored slip codes; and trailer weight eats brakes and wheel bearings. The $129 inspection covers all of it, with a written report before you hand over money.
02Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it?
A $95 inspection routinely uncovers $2,000–$5,000 in problems — or gives you certainty the vehicle is solid. Either outcome pays for itself. The only bad result is the one you find out about after you’ve bought the car.
03Does a used car in New York have to pass inspection before I buy it?
A licensed dealer has to deliver the vehicle with a valid NYS inspection. A private seller does not — you get 10 days after registering to have it inspected, and if it fails, the repairs are yours. Our report tells you up front whether you’re buying a sticker problem, from rust-perforated brake lines to a check engine light that fails the OBD-II test.
04What if the seller won’t allow an inspection?
That is your answer. A seller with nothing to hide has nothing to lose from 90 minutes at a licensed shop in Scotia. Walk away.
05Can you inspect a car I’m buying from a dealership?
Yes — any dealer should allow an independent inspection, including vehicles sold at Fogg’s Automotive next door. We inspect them all to the same standard and put it in writing either way.
