Tires — Sales, Mounting & Repair in Schenectady, NY
Fogg’s sells and installs tires for Schenectady drivers in Scotia, ten minutes over the Western Gateway Bridge. Tires are quoted by size and brand, mounting and balancing start at $25 per tire, and most sets go on the same day.
Capital Region price range
USD$25–$40
per tire, mount & balance
Tire prices vary by size and brand — we quote options at good/better/best. Flat repair ~$35. Rotation $25, free with most other services. TPMS sensors typically $65–$120 each installed. Seasonal changeovers on your own wheels are priced like a rotation.
Tire installs about an hour; flats, rotations, and changeovers while you wait.
Schenectady streets are hard on tires. Freeze-thaw opens potholes on State St, Route 7 and Broadway every March, and one hard hit can bubble a sidewall or bend a rim. We inspect tire and wheel together and tell you whether a repair is safe.
Winter is the other half. Hills like Union St and the climb to Bellevue reward real snow tires, and we swap seasonal sets in one visit. Tread at 2/32″ fails the NYS inspection, so we measure every tire you drive in on.

Questions
Should Schenectady drivers buy winter tires or all-seasons?
If you climb Union St or park on a hill street, dedicated winter tires stop shorter on packed snow. If you mostly drive plowed Route 7 and I-890, a good all-weather tire may be enough. We quote both by size.
When should I replace my tires?
New York fails a tire at 2/32″ during the state inspection, but wet and snow traction fall off a cliff below 4/32″ — and on the Western Gateway Bridge in a February slush storm, that gap is the difference between stopping and sliding.
Any tire over 6 years old should be checked for age cracking regardless of tread.
Do I need winter tires in Schenectady?
Not legally — New York doesn’t require them — but if you commute on hills like Glenridge Road or the Rotterdam side of Route 7, a dedicated winter set stops and turns far better below 45°F than any all-season.
Studded tires are legal in NY from October 16 through April 30. A second set on its own wheels makes the changeover about a rotation’s worth of labor.
Can my flat tire be repaired instead of replaced?
If the puncture is in the tread face, under 1/4″, and the tire hasn’t been run flat — usually yes, about $35. Sidewall damage, shoulder punctures, or run-flat damage means replacement; patching those is unsafe and we won’t do it.
Do I need all four tires or can I replace two?
On AWD vehicles — and the Capital Region runs a lot of Subarus and AWD crossovers — mismatched tread depths can damage the drivetrain, so often all four are required.
On FWD/RWD, two is fine if the others have good life left; new tires go on the rear for stability. We measure and give you the honest answer.
Why is my car vibrating at highway speed?
Most often wheel balance — weights fall off, tires wear unevenly, or a pothole on I-890 bent a rim. Sometimes it’s a separated tire belt or worn suspension. A road-force check tells us quickly, and balancing is a cheap fix if that’s all it is.
