01Is the Nokian Hakkapeliitta better than the Blizzak WS90?
On glare ice and deep, unplowed snow the Hakkapeliitta R5 often edges it; on a plowed commute the two are very close and the Blizzak is usually easier to get same-day. For rural and hill drivers in Saratoga, Schoharie or Montgomery County, the Hakkapeliitta — studless R5 or studded 10 — is the tire we point to. Both go on all four corners.
02Can I run the Nokian WR G4 all year in Schenectady?
Many drivers do, and it is the all-weather tire we would pick for that. It carries the three-peak mountain snowflake, handles a plowed winter well, and still wears to a 60,000-mile warranty in summer. If you climb hills before the plows or see ice every morning, a dedicated Hakkapeliitta set still stops shorter — but for one-set convenience, the WR G4 is the reference.
03Why do you order Nokian tires instead of stocking them?
Nokian sells through a narrower dealer network than the mass-market brands, so we order by size from the distributor rather than carry every size on the rack. Most sizes arrive the next day. Call with your size and we will confirm the date before you book; for a winter set, order a week or two ahead of the first forecast.
04Are Nokian tires studdable, and are studs legal in New York?
The Hakkapeliitta 10 comes factory-studded, which is the best way to run studs — Nokian’s studs are anchored in the mold, not pressed in afterward. New York permits studded tires from October 16 through April 30 only. For a plowed Schenectady commute the studless Hakkapeliitta R5 is quieter and nearly as capable; studs earn their keep on rural glare ice.
